The post over at Daily Kos starts “If you struggle with shyness as I have, yet simultaneously value community as I do, the internet can be a great place,” and it rings a strange bell. For years, I have thought that introverts far outnumber extroverts in Toastmasters, that we are an organization of shy people. And I’ve also felt that our real strengths include building self confidence as much as communications skill. You might not agree with the political thought in the original post, but it’s hard to disagree with the thoughts about building community. As the author says, “All of this makes me, makes each of us, a little better and stronger–talking to people we never would otherwise, but now are connected to through this community.” I’m glad we’ve got a place like Brinker Toastmasters not just to work on speaking skills, but also to become better members of a community.
