Lifehacker has just posted another of occasional pieces about public speaking, this one titled How to Present Yourself Powerfully. Much appreciated is the advice to join Toastmasters. This is called Part I, so keep an eye out for Part II.

Plumbers and Taxes
Today’s New York Times has a political feature of interest to Toastmasters–a side-by-side comparison of stump speeches by both major candidates. There’s an informative word cloud and some interesting analysis of the techniques in play. If you don’t get the paper, you can probably find the article on the web.
Area 83 Contest is Over
Brinker Toastmasters met with members of other clubs in Area 83 this morning for their Fall Contest. We prefer to think that our own Joann Heck set the standard, but we were entertained by presentations from Amelia Autrey, Charles Palmer, and Kim West. Ralph Sierra was contest master and Linda Schultz was chief judge. The Table Topics and Humorous Speech champion selected by the judges is Amelia Autrey. Be sure to plan to attend the Division H Contest, Amelia’s next stop at 5:30 pm on November 1 at the Fairfax County Government Center.
Brinker History
Today is the birthday of Brinker Founder Larry Welch. His electronic newsletter, On the Run, arrived from Thailand yesterday and one thought, among many stood out for me:
I WAS BORN TO A WOMAN I NEVER KNEW AND RAISED BY ANOTHER WHO TOOK IN ORPHANS. I DO NOT KNOW MY BACKGROUND, MY LINEAGE, AND MY BIOLOGICAL OR CULTURAL HERITAGE BUT WHEN I MEET SOMEONE NEW, I TREAT THEM WITH RESPECT. FOR, AFTER ALL, THEY COULD BE MY PEOPLE.
James A. Michener (1907-1997), consummate traveler, writer, philanthropist, author of Tales of the South Pacific
A powerful thought, and a good way to be remembered on your birthday.
