NPR helps us remember the words of The Declaration of Independence by broadcasting a reading every year. After you listen, take a look at the finalists’ entries in Slate’s contest to shorten the Declaration to Twitter length. I think you’ll find some of the entries vivid and refreshing. (If you watch HBO, you might also find some inspiration in a broadcast of actors, leaders, and students reading the Declaration, the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.) A wonderful holiday to you all.
The National Archives conducts quite a celebration on the Fourth. In the video of the event you can hear the Archivist of the United States announce the winner that tiny declaration contest about 44 minutes in, and a very lively reading of the Declaration begins about 56 minutes in.
One more for the Fourth–On this date in 1855, Walt Whitman published Song of Myself. When I remembered this, I also remembered this old flyer for the club. Except that it refers to a former meeting place, it’s still pretty good.
